Ninety thousand Better Shelter units stand in eighty countries. What Makes a Home asks what happens after the shelter goes up.

“The routines, hardships, and creature comforts that define life in these temporary shelters.”
Architectural Digest, 14 October 2024
Three photographers, five countries: Björn Wallander in Chad, Brazil and India; Ci Demi in Türkiye; Ali Haj Suleiman in Syria. Not hardship, but the small deliberate acts that turn a shelter into a home. Kobra’s kitchen in Farchana camp. Gustavo, a Venezuelan refugee in Brazil, coaching the neighbourhood’s kids.
The exhibition opened at Ideal Glass Studios in the West Village, 25–27 September 2024, during Climate Week and the UN General Assembly, with the Consulate General of Sweden in New York. Rocket—Science built how it spoke: the identity, whatmakesahome.org, the catalogue, the social films and the book that followed.
